Schröder Fleischwaren GmbH, German Processed Meat Producer Innovates with Cryovac Slicepak®
Schröder Fleischwaren GmbH is a family-owned, traditional meat producer located in Saarbrücken, in the Western part of Germany, right next to the French border. With a staff of more than 500, the company offers a wide variety of fresh meat products. The main products in the broad range on offer include different types of cooked sausages, as well as paté and ham specialities. The Schröder company is famous for its "Saarländer Fleischwurst".
Thanks to its own network of retail outlets and its capacity to control daily deliveries, Schröder can ensure the safe distribution of its wide range of meat products, thereby providing a guarantee of fresh food service. In this respect, the company constantly seeks high performance packaging to ensure the preservation of freshness and food security.
Last year, Schröder launched a new product range specifically targeted at the self-service retail cases. To ensure a successful commercial launch, the company opted for new packaging. It chose new barrier foam trays (BFT) for its range of fresh meat and meat sausages and additionally an innovative concept for its new range of sliced processed meats (cold cut ham and sausage specialties and poultry pâté).
The Solution
 Schröder turned to packaging specialist Cryovac in July 2001 to find a new packaging that would fill all requirements.
The innovative Cryovac Slicepak® concept had been recently launched on the marketplace and this packaging offered a highly attractive as well as secure pack, a perfect solution for the new Schröder processed meat products.
Established as a new standard in the self-service offer of sliced meats, Slicepak offers unparalleled freshness appeal and enhanced differentiation on display shelves. The concept combines a rigid, flat barrier foam (EPS) support with the clear, anti-fog, 25-micron Cryovac® SPF25 shrink film. It offers a pack presentation with enhanced product visibility, as well as optimised shelf life and increased flexibility with a wide range of sizes and colours. Storage space is kept to a minimum thanks to the product’s flat shape.

Slicepak comes as a complete system, comprising packaging materials and high performance equipment. To best display its sliced processed meats, Schröder opted for the Cryovac Slicepak® BFS 1523 (barrier foam support) in white, which comes with an easy opening feature. To achieve the production performance they were looking for, Schröder invested in a Sealpac lidding machine to run the new Slicepak packaging concept.
"We provided Schröder with permanent technical support and helped them set up the new packaging process", commented Bernd Schümann, Applications Engineer North Europe for Cryovac. "With joint efforts, testing and trialing, we were able to find the appropriate equipment to run the new process smoothly."
The Results
After positive testing at the Schröder affiliates, the commercial launch took place in November 2001 at a number of retailers, including Marktkauf, Globus and the company’s affiliates. The new products are a great success and demand is increasing steadily.
Clearly the attractive presentation – a new "look and feel" which many consumers associate with a hand-made pack – offers added value and strong consumer appeal. Other advantages are product security, longer shelf life and a highly efficient production process. Thanks to such innovation, Schröder is achieving pleasing sales results and increasing its market share

"We can thus achieve outstanding differentiation when compared to conventionally packed sliced meat products. Demand is increasing steadily now and we are considering investing in additional packaging equipment".
